Apprentice Wildland Firefighter: The Forest Service wildland firefighter apprenticeship application period starts on August 11. Applications are accepted on USAJOBS, August 11-25. An apprentice firefighter on a wildland fire crew performs fire suppression and fuels management duties. Apprentices will complete 3,000 hours of on-the-job training. They will also complete a residential firefighting academy at the Wildland Fire Training Center in McClellan Park, CA. Apprentices will be paid and all training costs are included. Upon successful completion of the program, apprentices will be in permanent GS-5 firefighter positions.
